the movie 'field of dreams' was about the reclusive author j d salinger
salinger's famous character holden caufield from 'the catcher in the rye', wore a red plaid hunting hat
ms dalzell was the williams college sawyer library reference librarian
she helped me find a book in the rare book section that showed a town map done in the early 1800s with only one house on water street near what was called 'the village green' which was where ms harris's house and our back yard was later but the house on the map was located on the other (west) side of water street from where our house was built (or was moved?)
our parents had always believed our house was very old but we all really wondered how old
the rare and historical books weren't allowed to be photocopied or checked out so my dad had to go up to the library - even so, it was extremely satisfying to both of us to find that map
'Robert Dalzell has taught at Williams for more than 30 years and is the Frederick Rudolph ’42 – Class of 1965 Professor of American Culture. Lee Dalzell was head of reference services at the Williams College Library until 2003.

Reviewers have had high praise for “The House the Rockefellers Built.” The Dalzells “do an excellent job,” comments the New York Times Sunday Book Review. “The perspective provided on America’s Guilded Age and on one of its most noted families makes the book well worth reading,” The Indianapolis Star wrote. According to Newsweek, the authors “shed welcome light on the endlessly fascinating subject of Americans and wealth … in a story so well told by the Dalzells, you see the anxieties that dogged their every step.” “A fascinating story … this narrative is convincing throughout,” Bloomberg.Com reported. “Page turning stuff” is the verdict of the Chicago Sun-Times.'
'"The House the Rockefellers Built" Reveals the Clan's Human Face'
- by robert f dalzell and lee baldwin dalzell
- kykuit
black hand attacks kykuit in 1906 the year the antitrust lawsuit against standard oil began and the year our great granddad william henry taft was crushed between two railroad cars presumably working for the old boston & maine railroad
president william howard taft broke up standard oil in 1911
the serbian black hand allegedly started the first world war in 1914:
''Upon learning of Ferdinand’s upcoming visit, the Young Bosnians, a secret revolutionary society of peasant students, began plotting to assassinate him. In May, Gavrilo Princip, Trifko Grabez and Nedeljko Cabrinovic traveled to the Serbian capital of Belgrade, where they received six handheld bombs, four semi-automatic pistols and cyanide suicide capsules from members of the so-called Black Hand, a terrorist group with close ties to the Serbian army. ny times book review
oh yeah that's right, after our high school american literature class was broken up into groups of 3 students each, chris moore, i and the dalzell's son jeff had to write endings to 'the catcher in the rye' for mr fernander
hmm mr fenander now lives 17 miles from j d salinger's adopted town of cornish, nh
it was chris and my senior year if i recall, which would put it just before or just after the assassination of john lennon, who was allegedly killed on december 8th, 1980 and salinger stopped giving interviews, or gave his last interview, in june 1980
and it was really weird because jeff and chris wrote amazing endings that sounded just like holden caufield, of whom they both kind of reminded me of !
- the dalzells lived in the tenney house
professor dalzell passed away in February
the college allegedy purchased mt hope farm after alta rockefeller prentice, who was jd's daughter, passed away and bequethed it to a hospital in ny city in 1962?
esther was the caretaker of the rockefeller's elm tree house located in mount hope farm on green river road in our town after working in the williams college provost and faculty offices for nearly 30 years
she was a field
i remember my second year of t-shirt league baseball when i, her son jeff and his cousin guido were on the same team
i remember my dad and i talking to esther and jeff as we were about to leave the game and she told us jeff guido and i were related and she explained how but it was to hard to keep track of back then, we were like 7 & 8 years old
there was something important about remembering that tho because it always stuck with me
now jeff is a writer near minneapolis where frederick vanderbilt field returned from exile to
ridgeview farm, which had been run by the young family for 12 generations, was nearly directly across sloane road from the field farm and very close to hall house
jeff was related to brigham young and ambrose hall had left williamstown and eventually passed away in the town and the same year the book of mormon was discovered by joseph smith
his dad quinton was a ww2 fighter pilot
ambrose hall was winston churchill's great grandfather and churchill had nationalized the anglo iranian oil company that became bp which helped the allies win ww2
later the shah of iran's family would move to our hometown after the iranian prime minister mohammad mossadegh nationalized the anglo iranian oil company from the british causing operation ajax
after the revolution the shah's family were exiled on south street across from the clark art museum in williamstown
