'rust' was based on a true story
the filming took place just north of sante fe, new mexico on the bonanza creek ranch, which has thousands of acres and 5 movie set 'towns' and has had a number of popular movies film there
filming began october 6th
the film was on it's 12th day of filming and had been planned to be completed in 21 days
the shooting occured on october 21st
the 911 calls about a shooting at the 'rust' movie set came in at 1:50 pm
